Minooka lures Alsip company with tax breaks

WMC Inc. is close to closing a deal on a lot in the Twin Rails Industrial Park in Minooka. Recent approvals for three years of tax abatements by Grundy County municipalities have set in motion the final steps for land purchase, WMC Vice President Bill Kuhn said. Although no land has been purchased for the metal fabricating and millwright business, Kuhn said they plan to build a 25,000-square-foot facility, doubling the floorspace of their current operation in Alsip.

The company makes and installs equipment for food companies and quarries. Included on its staff are millwrights, machinists, fabricators and welders. It predicts employing 70 to 80 people.

"We've outgrown the facility in Alsip," President Brandon Goodwin said.
"The facility we're building (in Minooka) will be over two times the size of our current plant, with the large lot size allowing for expansion. Since all of our customers are outside of the city (of Chicago), we can readily do all our business from the Minooka location."

Kuhn said the tax incentives definitely helped the business pick the Minooka location. Municipal groups that have approved the tax abatements include Grundy County, Minooka, the two Minooka school districts, Joliet Junior College, the fire protection district, Aux Sable Township and the Three Rivers Library District.

Because of the tax abatement, WMC will only pay 25 percent of its $84,428 tax bill, or $21,107, in its first year in Minooka. It is expected to pay $42,214 in the second year and $63,321 in its third year.
